Kennebrickport Public Safety

Kennebrickport is a tiny town nestled along the New England coast, with a permanent population that barely reaches 400. The town becomes incredibly busy during the tourist season (as many New England towns do) and as call volume over the years increased, the town weighed their options and budgets and in 2010, made the decision to combine all of the town Public Safety agencies into the Kennebrickport Department of Public Safety.

KDPS has a regular duty crew of 2, who are cross-trainined in Police, Fire, and EMS. The duty crew is supplemented by off-duty and volunteer members, who can handle additional calls or be an extra set of hands at larger incidents. In addition, the agency has a Fire/EMS Chief, and a Police Chief. The dicipline seperation for the two chiefs was thought to be necessary, as Fire and Police incident command are very different roles that require different skill sets and knowledge and as such should be handled by different people.

In the event of a fire or EMS call, the duty crew will respond directly or back to the station to retrieve the apparatus. If the call type requires it, or the patrol crew are busy, the chiefs, off-duty members, and volunteers will be paged as well.
